Tips for KYOTO
Summer Riverside Dining
From May to September, special dining spaces appear by and above Kyoto’s famous rivers in the downtown area, Kibune, Takao and Takagamine. Restaurants in the areas set up special seats along the rivers only during summer months. This is one of the summer treats only Kyoto can offer.
What is “Yuka” riverside dining?
Restaurants in certain areas in the city set up special seats by/above the river only during summer months. In northern Kyoto, like in Kibune, these special seats are called Kawadoko while in the city, in Kiyamachi and Pontocho, they are called Yuka. In Kibune, diners can try the seasonal kaiseki course including fresh river fish. The seats are set just above the river so the air is very cool and refreshing. In the central city area, like Kiyamachi and Pontocho, there are a variety of cuisine options to choose from: Japanese, Italian, French, ethnic, yakiniku (Japanese beef barbeque) and more. The serene Kamo River and night view of Higashiyama ridges will add that extra touch of elegance to your dining experience.
