Located on Kyoto’s most bustling and popular Shijo Street, Kahitsukan Kyoto Museum of Contemporary Art sits quietly like an oasis in the midst of the noisy city.
The permanent collection mainly consists of works by the modern Japanese-style painter, Kagaku Murakami (1888-1939), oil painter, Kaoru Yamaguchi (1907-1968), and internationally renowned Rosanjin Kitaoji (1883-1959) who is considered one of Japan’s greatest 20th-century artists in all fields of Japanese art and craft.
The current special exhibition expressly features Rosanjin and the active role she played in a wide range of art, including calligraphy, sealmaking, cooking and pottery. Not only was she recognized as an artist of exceptional talent,
Rosanjin was also well-known as a gourmand who attained the pinnacle of gastronomy.

  2. The approximately 100 items by Rosanjin on display, part of the private collection of Kahitsukan’s director, explore the relationship between Japanese cuisine and its dishware in which the Japanese spirit of hospitality and concept of nature coalesce.
