Opened in 1930, a retro-modern café with the atmosphere of a Parisian café

Since it’s opening in 1930, this café has always been popular in Kyoto and still attracts a number of fans from all around Japan.  This is also where Japan’s first French baguette was made.  The first generation owner studied in Paris and decided to open a café in Kyoto imitating the Café Latin that he liked in Paris, where students and university teachers can gather and study.  The café still retains its retro-atmosphere from that time. As soon as diners enter the café, they see a large wooden table and chairs.  These are some of the earlier works of Tatsuaki Kuroda who later became the Living National Treasure for his skills in lacquer and woodcarving.  The first owner of Shinshindo came across Kuroda’s works in a studio on Kiyomizuzaka and loved them at first sight.  He immediately asked Kuroda to make something original for his café.  The present 4th generation owner, Kawaguchi recalls, “I heard that Kuroda said to my great-grand father, ‘This table and the chairs can be in use for well over 200 years.  Please take good care of them and cherish them.’  Kuroda continued to come to our café until just a few months before he passed away but every time he came, he looked at the table and chairs with fond eyes as if he was looking at his own children.”  People read books while enjoying a cup of coffee and spend time as they like at the large wooden table.  This is Shinshindo’s regular scene.  Only the table’s luster shows that a long time has passed.
