Castella sponge cake with Daitokuji Natto beans available only at the main shop
Zenkasho-in is a sweet shop that opened in August 2009 on Muromachi Street, where many old businesses (mainly kimono) still remain. The building is a classical Kyoto-style machiya townhouse built in 1700. They produce unique sweets that you can only discover here. Besides their famous “Zen Castella (sponge cake),” another truly unique and must-try item is the “Muromachi Castella” which is available only at the main shop. This sponge cake has Daitokuji Natto (a kind of special sweet and salty soy bean produced in the Daitoku-ji Temple complex area) on the bottom and the cake is very fluffy as it uses grated yam potato as a secret ingredient. Daitokuji Natto’s salty flavor enhances the complex sweetness of the cake.
