    Novel kappo restaurant taking over philosophy and hospitality from ochaya

    This restaurant is run by Fukushima, an ochaya (restaurant where diners can enjoy meals and be entertained by maiko and geiko) and okiya (place where maiko live) in Gion.  They opened this kappo Japanese-style restaurant in the southern area of Gion in April 2013.  The interior is filled with the refreshing aroma of wood and the sophisticated design is applied into every details – a fine fanlight on the wall by the counter seats and a courtyard garden with bamboo silhouettes – perfect symbols from the classical and elegant world of Kagai, the district where maiko and geiko culture still remains.  The head chef, Mr. Tsuji, previously worked for a famous restaurant in Kyoto, “Hayashi.”  The female owner of Fukushima loved his dishes and wished to have him as the head chef when she decided to open this restaurant.  They serve a course consisting of nine simple, yet delicious seasonal tastes.  Appreciating the bowls and plates selected by the owner is another attraction.
