    Worship the birth place of Tenjin and offering an adorable shell amulet

    There are many shrines in Kyoto that Michizane Sugawara, a Heian-period academic genius, is enshrined. AyakoTanmangu Shrine located in front of Higashi Hongan-ji Temple is another one of them. Michizane who was relegated to Dazaifu in Kyushu and later died in despair. Afterwards, famine and disease caused by natural disasters spread throughout the ancient capital causing political disorder, because of this people became afraid and believed that they were cursed by Michizane's vengeful spirit. Tajihi no Ayako, who was the nanny of Michizane built a small shrine to enshrine “Tenjin” in her garden in remembrance of the goodness of the deceased Michizane. After, she was said to have received a message from Michizane saying that he wished to be enshrined in Kitano. This shrine has been worshiped by local people to this day, a lot of people visit here seeking advantages to improve their learning and enhancing matchmaking. There is a stone stool that is said Michizane sat on the way to Dazaifu, and also the statue of Ayako in the shrine. Adorable shell amulet is also popular with female visitors.
