Appreciation for both dishes and wares; A restaurant loved by cultured people with discerning tastes

Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima, Bunroku Shishi, Chogoro Kaionji, Ryotaro Shiba, Toko Kon, Shusaku Endo, Masako Shirasu… These are just some of the famous writers and artists who loved CHIHANA and regularly visited to enjoy their dishes. They came and tried to take a counter seat to fully enjoy conversations with the chef and their companions.  What attracted them the most was not only CHIHANA’s beautiful dishes using seasonal tastes but also the fine bowls and plates, including real antiques, that CHIHANA’s owner selected with his professional eye.  The first generation owner and chef, Mr. Moto-o Nagata, opened his restaurant on Shijo Street in Gion in 1946. In those days, during the mid-Showa period (1926-1988), Kyoto was a center of fervor for everything cultural and owners of antique shops along with those who loved literature and culture never tired of discussing Japanese antiques. It was such a passionate period of time, which largely contributed to the formation of Japanese antique studies. CHIHANA was like a salon where cultured people gathered. Surrounded by the owner’s fine antique collection, their conversations usually continued until late into the night. Today, the scene remains unchanged; customers who take pleasure in discussing Japanese antiques with the present owner and chef, Mr. Takeyoshi Nagata’s enjoy his dishes every day.
