    Yugyo-an in Choraku-ji Temple

Hearty hospitality by the head Buddhist priest

Yugyo-an is a casual temple accommodation associated with Choraku-ji Temple.  The lodging, on Higashioji Street, is located a little away from the main temple precinct, and it is actually a very convenient and entertaining setting as it is close to Hanamikoji Street (where the maiko and geiko world is vibrantly alive) and where many restaurants and bars are located.  The room is equipped with a private bath, an unusual feature for temple accommodation.  In the morning, visitors walk to the temple and join the morning service.  Only 15 minutes walk will bring you to a different world from Gion, where you spend a night.  Water cascades down from the waterfall and you will be surrounded by scenic beauty.  The main deity of this temple is a unique Juntei Kannon Bosatsu.  There are also many attractive statues of Hotei (one of the seven good luck deities).  The warm smile of the head priest looks similar to the Hotei.  After having a temple tour with him as your guide, you will be served breakfast prepared by his wife in the temple.  Her Kyoto-style egg roll is just awesome!
