“Kohaku Nagashi” served in a traditional Kyoto machiya
A large shop curtain marking the entrance to Daigokuden Hompo on Rokkaku Street catches everyone’s eyes. This old Japanese sweet shop opened in 1885 and serves beautiful seasonal sweets. By the sweet shop in the 140-year-old machiya townhouse stands a Japanese café named “Seien”. If you visit the café, a must-try item is the Kohaku Nagashi (April to December only). This jelly made from seaweed starch with homemade syrup has such a unique texture. The syrup flavor is changed monthly such as cherry blossom in April, plum wine in June, brown sugar in August, grape in September, etc. If you visit here during autumn and winter, try their sweet red bean soup with chestnut.
