    Daigo-ji Temple

World Heritage with gorgeous cherry blossoms loved by Hideyoshi Toyotomi

The history of this temple, one of Kyoto’s World Heritage Sites, dates back to 874.  One of the important disciples of the Buddhist priest, Kukai, opened a small hut on the top of Mount Daigo.  The entire mountain is regarded as the temple precinct and is divided into two areas: Kami Daigo on the upper side and Shimo Daigo on the lower side where more than 80 sub-temples stand.  The symbolic five-story pagoda was constructed to commemorate the spirit of Emperor Daigo.  One of the temples in this huge precinct is Sanpo-in, which consists of several temple buildings that include National Treasures and Important Cultural Heritages.  Their stroll-style garden with a large pond, designated as a place of Special National Scenic Beauty, exhibits beautiful scenes in every season.
