Preserving the original taste of Castella Sponge Cake in Kyoto

The predecessor of Daigokuden Honpo was a Japanese confectionery shop named “Yamashiroya” that opened in 1885.  The second-generation owner of Yamashiroya studied how to bake “Castella” sponge cake in Nagasaki prefecture, where the history of Japan’s Castella began, and opened Kyoto’s first Castella specialty shop in 1895.  There were few shops selling products using eggs as a key ingredient in those days since eggs were expensive.  Today, Daigokuden Honpo’s Castella is available only at their main shop and their branch shop and café, “Sei-en,” on Rokkaku Street.  This is surely a delicious product that delights everyone as a souvenir from Kyoto.
