Simple Japanese sweets served in the café atop the mountain

Hiei Saryo opened in 1997 to offer a comfortable stopping point for visitors who come to tour around the vast Enryaku-ji Temple precinct atop Mount Hiei.  They serve handmade traditional Japanese sweets such as zenzai (sweet red bean soup), goma daifuku (sweet dumplings flavored with sesame) and kuzu mochi (jelly-like sweets with a sweet red bean paste filling).  Their teas, including matcha (powdered green tea) and hojicha (roasted tea), are from a famous tealeaf shop in Kyoto that specializes in the finest quality tealeaves from Uji city.  The bowl of matcha green tea is made with pure water from Mount Hiei, where the café is located.  Sipping aromatic matcha will surely sooth your body and mind after walking a long distance on the mountain.
