    Ichihime Jinja Shrine

Enshrined guardian deities for markets and women worshipped by females in Japan

Ichihime Jinja Shrine was established by Fuyutsugu Fujiwara, who was the Sadaijin (Minister of the Left) by the order of Emperor Kanmu's for guarding both west and east cities in the ancient capital. It is famous for guarding women, as those enshrined here are all female deities, hence many females visit this shrine from all over Japan. The shrine has one of the seven famous spring waters called “Amenomanai”, which is said to have been used for the first bath for the imperial prince or princess. The well is called Ichigan Joju no Ido, it is said if you contribute an ema (a votive horse tablet) , drink the sacred water and pray to the deity, then your one wish will come true.
