Nostalgic Japanese pickles and dishes
A number of old small shops still stand in the Gion area. Kamiya Shoten is one of them that serves homemade Kyoto-style pickles in the center of Gion. Local people stop by this little shop to get fresh pickles to compliment their daily meal. Inside the shop is a number of barrels where the pickles are made. Besides the pickles are traditional Japanese dishes such as simmered white radish and hijiki seaweed. They are all the “taste of a Japanese home.” Their name is also known for their delicious miso soybean paste. Some people come to the shop from a distance only to purchase the miso. Homemade white miso: 600 yen (500g), 900 yen (extra fine: 500 g); available from December to March.
