Savory unagi eel dishes for someone special
Heading south from the bustling Sanjo Keihan station area along Nawate Street you will soon discover an extremely nostalgic store in-between traditional houses. There used to be a lot of fish shops on the street and Kanesho is one of the rare survivors still providing eel dishes after over 150 years. Their most popular menu item is an eel condiment for rice created by the second-generation owner. Finest quality eel is carefully grilled and simmered in sweetened soy sauce for many hours after which the chopped eel meat becomes the perfect condiment for plain rice. Adding a pinch of wasabi horseradish or sansho Japanese pepper enhances the taste even further. What is more, pouring hot tea over the rice deepens the aroma and savor of the eel and spices. Many diners prefer to keep this rice dish for the last dish of the course. The eel condiment keeps for a week at room temperature so people often get a pack or more as a souvenir for a special someone.
