A rare shop creating only the lids of tea powder containers
Kataoka Zoge-ten, founded in 1887, is one of the rare shops in Kyoto that creates only the lids for tea powder containers. A classical tea powder container used in the traditional tea ceremony has a tiny lid made of ivory. Kataoka Zoge-ten uses only real ivory for their items and their fine handiwork attracts many tea ceremony connoisseurs. Besides ivory lids for tea powder containers, they also produce tea powder scoopers and the bamboo sticks used to cut sweets in the tea ceremony. The third generation owner, Nobuo Kataoka, takes great care with every piece he makes. Since they use natural ivory, no single piece has the same form, so he creates the best shape and design for every piece considering the customer’s preference. His precise and careful work as well as the hard-to-find fine material he uses has gained the unquestioned trust of tea ceremony connoisseurs.
