Kiyomizu Junsei Okabeya

Simple and nostalgic Japanese sweet

Junsei is one of the best yu-dofu (boiled tofu) restaurants in Kyoto.  One of their branch restaurants is Okabeya that has a small store by the restaurant space where a variety of original sweets are available.  The most popular item is the Kyo Yasai Castella (sponge cake) using soybean powder produced in Kyoto.  Mini sponge cakes in the shape of Kyoto-original vegetables such as Kamo Nasu Eggplant, Shogoin Kabura Turnip, Shishigatani Kabocha Pumpkin look lovely and taste good.  The soft and fluffy texture and nice aroma of soybean powder spreads in your mouth.  This is Kyoto local’s favorite nostalgic snack.  The small package and reasonable price make for a great souvenir from Kyoto.  The best before period of five days is relatively long for this type of sweet, too.
