Temple nestled in the legendary and mysterious mountain
Kurama-dera Temple nestles in a mysterious Mount Kurama. The Buddhist priest, Gantei, who was one of the important disciples of Ganjin, commissioned to build this temple in 770 having the deity of Bishamonten. In the Heian period (794-1185) the temple was worshipped deeply as the guardian of the capital on the north direction. The Reiho-den Museum preserves a number of temple treasures including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The study used by Akiko Yosano (1878-1942) was moved to the location next to the museum. Also this temple is famous as a place where the legendary samurai, Yoshitsune Minamoto, spent his childhood and trained himself to be a strong samurai. The road are quite rough so it is recommended to wear good walking shoes.
