Take Rokusei’s special Kyoto cuisine lunch box with you on your exploration in Kyoto

Since opening in 1899 near Heian Jingu Shrine, Rokusei has served excellent Kyoto cuisine in a superb environment.  What made Rokusei famous was their Teoke Bento lunch box created by the second-generation owner after numerous trials and errors.  As he wished to have Kyoto cuisine enjoyed casually by more people, he came up with the great idea of making a lunch box composed of different Kyoto tastes.  The wooden container is also worth taking a look at as they are made one by one by the Living National Treasure craftsmen by hand.  Seasonal rice and soup is served with the lunch box.  For those who don’t have the time to enjoy Rokusei’s restaurant, go and get their Tenmabushi Bento lunch box at their branch store in the JR Kyoto Isetan Department Store.  Shrimp, shimeji mushrooms and mitsuba leaf tempura top the rice cooked with Japanese brown tea.  A leaf of Japanese pepper adds a hint of spiciness to accentuate the taste.

Introduced in the “Kyoto Machikado Gourmet” magazine, Fujingaho, August issue, 2012
