Lovingly made delicious pickles with selected ingredients
Located at the beginning of the east entrance to Nishiki Food Market, you will not miss Nishiki Takakuraya with its many wooden barrels in front of the shop. The barrels contain picked vegetables and nuka (fermented rice bran paste). Inside the shop, there are many kinds of pickles using seasonal vegetables as well as Kyo Yasai (vegetables originating in Kyoto). Their Asazuke pickles (a type of pickles which are pickled for a short time) have both a fresh taste and are full of flavor. They are good with rice as well as for enjoying just as a healthy snack. A wide selection of pickles are available such as “Kiyomasa Ninjin Asazuke (Celery Asazuke Pickle)” (photo right: 100g; 500 yen) and “Shizu-murasaki no Asazuke” which is made of “Shizu-murasaki” radish, a type of Kyoto originating rare type of vegetable (photo left: 60g; 500 yen).
