Classical atmosphere and hospitable service
Bar Sansui was moved from its previous location near Nijo Castle to their present location in Gion six years ago. “If we count, half of our customers are men and half are women. Groups of women-only often come too,” said the owner, Mr. Fuminao Takahashi. As he notes, Bar Sansui is one of a few bars that women can go casually in Gion where the majority of customers are usually men. Fuminao serves at the counter dressed in kimono tying the long sleeves up so that he can work smoothly – no wonder, because he is a son of a kimono merchant family in Kyoto. Not only his attire but also his motion is very gentle which might be a key to make female customers feel relaxed and to enjoy speaking with him. “I like to talk with my customers but never speak too much.” He knows who would like to engage in conversation and who would not. Drawings by the Japanese painter, Kuniyoshi Kaneko, adorn the white wall add a classical atmosphere to the interior.
