Ancient shrine traces back to “The Tale of Genji” with a popular power stone for matchmaking
Nonomiya is called the “starting point” for visiting Sagano area. Saio who was a representative of an emperor who used to serve for Ise Shrine cleansed herself at this shrine before going to Ise, and the shrine is also known as a place from the scene in which Hikaru Genjii visited Rokujo no Miyasundokoro in the Chapter of Sakaki in the tale of Genji. Kuroki-no-Torii and Koshibagaki (brushwood fence) trace back to the Tale of Genji, to this day. Various deities are enshrined in this shrine including “Nonomiya Okami”; God of Health and Wisdom, "Shirafuku Inari Daimmyojin"; God of Conception, Smooth Childbirth, and Prosperous Business, “Shiramine Benzaiten”; God of Fortune Business and Entertainment, and “Nonomiya Daikokuten”; God for Matchmaking. Among them, “Nonomiya Daikokuten” is especially popular for women because of its special benefits. Many wooden plates and ema votive horse tablet for matchmaking can be seen in the shrine, and that explains the high merits of this deity. Also, a power stone called “Okame-ishi” is in the shrine. It is said if you rub the stone, your wish can come true, so that the stone attracts many people, lining up in front of the stone on holidays.
