Famous curry udon noodle with delicious broth
Established in 1923, this noodle restaurant has been loved by the geiko (traditional Japanese female entertainers) and maiko (geiko apprentice) of the local area for many years. The famous and popular dish is the Curry Udon (wheat noodles in curry soup). The special homemade broth is what makes this spicy and delicious soup so popular. During the high season, 70-80 % of the customers say they order either Curry Udon or Curry Soba (buckwheat noodles). The menu choices are increasing all the time as they discover new ideas such as changing the type of noodles and adding toppings like cheese or deep-fried meat. This restaurant used to be a sweet parlor 80 years ago, thus some of the items such as anmitsu (agar jelly with sweet red bean paste) and zenzai (red bean sweet soup) are still on offer. They also deliver their food to ochaya (an establishment where patrons are entertained by geiko and maiko) and nearby Minamiza Theatre. One will know how popular and loved this restaurant is by locals by looking at the number of round fans on which the names of local geiko and maiko are painted. They present the fan with their name as a summer gift to their close customers and their surrounding people.
