    Okazaki Tsuruya

The restaurant visited by state guests where one can savor luxurious Japanese cuisine

The restaurant was established in 1908 in Kitahama, Osaka.  When Emperor Showa’s accession ceremony was held in the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the restaurant was appointed to be in charge of the accommodation and meals for VIP guests from around Japan.  This was the beginning of this restaurant in Kyoto.  When it moved to its present location in 1964, the building was renovated into a modern Sukiya (teahouse style) style by Isoya Yoshida, the architect who won Order of Culture, and a Japanese garden was created by Kumakichi Kato, a master in garden design of the Meiji Period (1868-1912).  Guests can enjoy savoring Japanese cuisine cooked with seasonal fresh ingredients from the ocean and mountains using the traditional culinary technique while absorbing the view of the beautiful Higashiyama mountain range.  This is truly one of the most authentic restaurants of Kyoto and is still visited by state guests.
