Otafuku is a small shop serving handmade ohagi located on an off the beaten lane in Higashiyama. Ohagi is a common Japanese sweet in which a rice ball (using sticky rice) is covered with sweet red bean paste or kinako soybean powder. Otafuku offers a variety of original ohagi. There are eight flavors: green plum, red bean, soy bean powder, white bean, black sesame, plum, green seaweed and ancient black rice. They are so colorful that they look like lovely western sweets. The most important element that decides the taste of ohagi is the rice’s texture. It is also important to cook the beans to a perfect softness without making them too sweet. This perfect balance of softness and sweetness attract many fans to Otafuku. Last, but not least, the cute and colorful appearance of assorted ohagi will be a big “wow” for that special teatime. Ohagi: 150 yen/piece (180 yen for white bean).
