    Pontocho Masuda

Serving Obanzai for 60 years in Pontocho, loved by the famous author, Ryotaro Shiba

Pontocho Masuda opened in 1952 and serves obanzai (Kyoto’s home dishes).  Every dish is simple yet hearty, and goes perfectly with Japanese sake.  Masuda’s long-term fans include some famous figures such as Ryotaro Shiba, the acclaimed Japanese author.  Shiba had been Masuda’s regular customer since long before he became a professional author when he was still a newspaper journalist.  The third generation owner and chef still remembers Shiba very well and said, “Mr. Shiba visited us a few times a year just before he passed away.”  There are some interior items in the restaurant where people can discover mementoes of Shiba’s, which his fans love to look for.
