Japanese “Mingei” Arts & Crafts coloring your life
The owner, Naoto Shikama, studied contemporary art at an auction company in the UK and has worked as an art dealer. This is his gallery and antique shop. “Living with art” – is his motto and he introduces art and craft works in his gallery that adds a touch of enchantment to people’s lives. He organizes special exhibitions with both contemporary and antique items in the spirit of Mingei, the Japanese arts & crafts movement led by Muneyoshi Yanagi (1889-1961; a designer and artist). Some of the items displayed in the gallery are by famous artists like Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie and Kanjiro Kawai along with works by unknown artists. Fine ceramic works produced in European cities that were influenced by Japanese ceramics, such as Delfts ceramics in Netherland, are also worth checking out.
