Sojiki Nakahigashi, quietly located near Ginkaku-ji Temple, is one of the most difficult restaurants in Kyoto to make a reservation. Once you have a chance to experience Nakahigashi, you will understand why. The chef and owner, Hisao Nakahigashi, goes out into the mountains and fields every morning to collect his ingredients for the day. He feels and enjoys the seasonal blessings with his senses and reproduces them in his dishes. Starting with a plate of assorted appetizers, every plate and bowl, including simmered vegetables and grilled fish, is like a reflection of a beautiful season in Japan. The last dish is plain rice cooked in a traditional oven. Merely the simplest condiments (dried small fish and homemade pickles) transform a bowl of rice into the finest dish that nothing else can surpass. Nakahigashi offers the true taste of the earth and what makes them even more special is their hospitable and smiling service.
