Simple candy made with traditional methods
Surugaya Gion Shimosato is located in Sueyoshi-cho, to the north side of Kyoto’s geiko & maiko quarter in the Gion. The first generation owner trained himself at a long-honored Japanese confectionary store and became independent about 200 years ago. Since then, they have focused on making simple but exquisite candies using finest quality ingredients like honey and brown sugar. Maiko in the nearby Gion and kabuki actors are their long-term regular fans. Their signature item is Gion Mameheito (864 yen/pack). Japanese soybeans are carefully roasted and caramelized with syrup, made using their secret recipe. According to the staff, the most important and difficult part is adjusting the timing to make the syrup’s taste and aroma perfect. The beans immersed in the beautiful amber colored candy create a crispy texture in the mouth.
