Tankuma Kitaten was opened in 1928 along the Takase River. During the Edo period (1600-1868), there were many restaurants serving seasonal river fish dishes in this area. The restaurants provides various authentic dishes cooked by traditional techniques and sensibilities which were passed down for many years. They have attracted many writers and artists including masters of tea ceremonies from Omotesenke and Urasenke Schools and Jun-ichiro Tanizaki. The name of the restaurant, “Tankuma,” is associated with the name of the restaurant, “Tan-ei,” where the first generation chef of Tankuma, Kumazaburo Kurisu, worked to be a chef. At present, the third generation woner and chef, Masahiro Kurisu, shows his great skill. Not only the genuine kaiseki course dishes but the reasonably priced lunch menu, “Hangetu Bento” and “Shokado Bento” are also recommended. Their excellent and tasty bento lunch sets are popular for ladies.
