So special and pure – The rice jar that only prominent craftsmanship can complete

Tarugen was opened in the late Edo period (1600-1868) as the manufacturer of wooden tubs and sake barrels.  Later on, they started to create bowls and plates as well as flower vases using their sophisticated techniques.  The rice jar is particularly noteworthy.  Made from pieces of wood, the border of each piece is almost invisible – some people consider them pieces of art.  The fifth generation owner is solely responsible for this rice jar, from choosing the materials to the final finish.  Therefore, orders are by reservation only and there is a six-month waiting period. However, its beauty and thinness are breathtaking and is well worth the wait. Wooden rice jars are not likely to be seen in many households today, but its truly traditional style will make you look back at the beauty of old life in Japan.  The photo is of the rice jar by the craftsman’s handwork (48,000 yen).
