Shojin Zen vegetarian and kaiseki dishes favored by Daigo-ji Temple

Tobajin has served traditional Shojin Buddhist vegetarian cuisine for over 100 years.  The famous and powerful Daigo-ji Temple, located just near by, preferred Tobajin’s dishes.  Sesame tofu, Kyoto vegetables, yuba (soy milk skin), fu (flour gluten) and other typical specialties of Kyoto are skillfully prepared and all dishes are served in one large red lacquered bowl.  The vivid red color and the variety of dishes are especially attractive to female diners.  During spring, the bowl is full of spring specialties such as yomogi herb tofu, vegetable tofu, tempura of butterbur sprout, Ostrich fern and Fatsia sprouts, fu gluten wrapped in a bamboo leaf, simmered yuba with gingko nuts and lily bulbs, and more.  The Shojin Bowl is 4,200 yen or 5,250 yen.  Tobajin can prepare a full course of kaiseki and special dishes for cherry blossom viewing parties.
