Custom-made Japanese split-toe socks to complete your Japanese garb
Ueda Sadanosuke Shoten is the only shop in Kyoto remaining today that provides custom-made tabi socks (traditional Japanese sock with a split between the big toe and other toes). Ueda’s tabi socks perfectly fit each customer’s feet with no crimples. Using a special measure called monjaku, they measure the customer’s bare feet from every angle, as many as 10 points on one foot, including the diameter of the ankles and big toes. Next, they carefully make cardboard patterns for sewing the textile with a sewing machine. Surprisingly, no marks are applied on the textile and they rely only on experience for the sewing of these incredibly delicate and fine works. Naturally, Ueda’s tabi socks fit each customer’s feet just perfectly, even if the form of the right and left foot is slightly different. “Not only the perfect fit but the elegant appearance is another appeal of Ueda’s tabi,” is regular customers’ praise of Ueda’s work. Of course, no ironing is necessary. The quality soft calico hardly damages the inside fabric of kimono and doesn’t cause static electricity when they touch the kimono while walking. Ueda’s durable tabi socks are an essential item for traditional Japanese kimono dressing.
