Oldest existing shrine in Japan with natural spring
Ujigami Jinja Shrine, located in Uji, has a long history. During a certain period, after the establishment of Byodo-in Temple, once it used to be known as Chinju-sha shrine under the protection of Hidehira Fujiwara. The enshrined deities are Emperor Ojin, his son, Uji no Wakiiratsuko, and his brother Emperor Nintoku. The main hall is set up along the east bank at the foot of Mt. Mitoku, and is the oldest shrine building in Japan that is designated as a National Treasure as well as being registered as a World Heritage in 1994, along with Byodo-in Temple. Also there is Kasuga Jinja Shrine that was built in the Kamakura period and designated as an Important Cultural Property.
